Summer Term 2018

Year 6 RE Topics this term: Witnesses, Healing and Common Good.

We will also study one World Faith: Islam

SATs: As you are aware, the children in Year 6 will sit SATs tests during the week beginning Monday 14th May. These will be on Arithmetic, Mathematical Reasoning, Reading, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling. The first half term will concentrate on key skills needed to successfully complete the tests, whilst the second half term will focus on science and topic work.

We are in for a treat this term as for our cross curricula topic we will be learning all about the historical and geographical importance of some of the countries involved in the World Cup.

We will also be reading the fantastic novel Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo- we will be linking lots of our written work to this.

Kensuke’s Kingdom/ The World Cup!

Literacy: Year 6 will be reading the novel ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ as this has fantastic links to travelling around the world and football! Most writing tasks will be linked to this and the World Cup.

·         A detailed interview– where the person being interviewed is a World Cup footballer.

·         An informal letter, in the role of Michael, to his friend Eddy Dodds?

·         A detailed newspaper report on ‘Michael Disappears’?

·         A diary entry, in the role of Michael, describing some of his days on board the Peggy Sue?

·         A report: If I could visit 3 places in the world I would choose …… because……

·         A short story/narrative ‘Lost at Sea?

·         A detailed balanced argument for a child travelling around the world for a year?

·         A description/explanation: If I was lost on a desert island and only had 5 things with me I would want…… because…

History: The study of the culture and key historical events in: Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Uruguay

Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Iran (Groups A and B of the World Cup)

Geography: Use maps to locate the where key countries are in the world.  Also identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones (including day and night).
Art & Design:  about great artists, architects and designers in history (Chosen artist from World Cup Groups A & B)


ICT: Use search engines and online encyclopaedia to find information on World Cup Groups A & B).

Create a Power point presentations on ‘What is it like to live in….?’  Use software to manipulate images to create some panoramic images of a scenes from World Cup Groups A& B

MFL: When studying Spain: read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language.

Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary.


Homework: Homework grids will be sent out with each topic. Have fun and earn homework points. Any additional homework will be given on a Friday to be generally handed in the following Tuesday.

Please spend some time discussing the homework and /or helping your child with it. The first half term will involve extra mathematics, reading and grammar/spelling activities.

Reading: Please ensure your child brings home their reading book or reads a book from home, every night, either out loud or silently and then discusses the book with an adult. Home reading records must be brought in to school every day. Reading three times per week is expected.

P.E: PE is on a Thursday and Friday (PE kits need to be in school all week in case of extra lessons or additional activities.)
